First Zero
We began this marvelous and challenging journey on 3/2/19. One thing we’re learning is that many hikers resupply every 3-4 days to cut down on their pack weight, and often take a “zero “ day in town. This is a day of no hiking on the AT (Appalachian Trail). Well, tomorrow is our first zero day , 3/21/19. Today was a “nearo” day, or near zero, as we hiked out of Smokey Mountain National Park to Newfound Gap (5 miles) and a wonderful young man shuttled us to Hot Springs, NC where we are meeting Rachel and Patrick for 2 days of hiking. Some thoughts about the young people we have met thus far. First off, they are really committed to the environment. Secondly, they are kind, intelligent and fun. Steve and I both feel renewed hope for our Nation knowing the next generation of leaders really get it. Personally I have looked for signs of Joel’s presence on the AT and if the last week of sun doesn’t do it nothing will. Never mind that it was freezing and we hiked on ic covered rocks...very slo...
